A powerful earthquake struck Nepal yesterday, Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023, at 2:21 pm local time. The quake had a magnitude of 5.7 and was felt in several areas around the epicenter.

According to VolcanoDiscovery, the quake's epicenter is located near Dipayal, Doti, Sudurpashchim Pradesh, approximately 92,300 meters away from Mahendranagar (pop. 9,100) and 89 km from Tikapur (pop. 23,400). The earthquake should have been felt as light shaking in Jumla (pop. 20,900), which is located 86 km away from the epicenter.

The quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter, although the exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.6 as well.

The earthquake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km, making it a potentially powerful event that could have caused significant damage. However, according to VolcanoDiscovery, the quake should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
