Estimated Conflict-Related Fatalities Fall for Third Consecutive Year in MENA

According to recent reports, estimated conflict-related fatalities have decreased for the third consecutive year in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This significant drop in fatalities is largely attributed to a rise in conflicts in Asia and Oceania, as well as sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2021, an estimated 150,000 conflict-related fatalities were reported globally, which represents a 13% increase from the previous year. While this may seem like a worrisome trend, it's important to note that two-thirds of these fatalities occurred in just five countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Syria.

One notable shift in armed conflicts is the decrease in interstate wars. In 2021, only three such conflicts were reported between states: low-level border clashes between India and Pakistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The majority of armed conflicts (19) were high-intensity, with over 1000 conflict-related deaths occurring within each country.

A total of three major armed conflicts resulted in over 10,000 conflict-related fatalities: Afghanistan, Yemen, and Myanmar. These conflicts are often characterized by intense fighting between government forces and one or more armed non-state groups.

Geographically, active armed conflicts occurred in at least 46 states worldwide in 2021. The Americas saw eight such conflicts, Asia and Oceania nine, Europe three, MENA eight, and sub-Saharan Africa 18.

While the decline in conflict-related fatalities is a welcome trend, it's essential to recognize that armed conflicts continue to pose significant threats to global security. Efforts to address these issues must be sustained and multifaceted, involving governments, international organizations, and civil society groups working together to promote peace and stability worldwide.
